A sperm sample to assess the sperm quality #
* Blood tests for HIV and Hepatitis must either be done in Denmark (see our price list) or analysed in a laboratory in your country that is certified according to the EU Tissues and Cells Directive. Laboratories that are accredited according to DIN EN ISO 15189 are also accepted. We need a signed copy of the original test results that testifies that the laboratory is certified according to the EU Tissues and Cells Directive or a copy of the ISO accreditation. Otherwise we have to analyse them in Denmark.
# We kindly ask you to bring these test results with you for the interview, so we can plan your treatment immediately during the interview.
A normal sperm sample will look as follows:
- At least 2 ml of sperm
- At least 20 million sperm cells for each ml of semen
- At least 50 % of the sperm cells must move and be alive
- A certain proportion the sperm cells must move rapidly
- At least 30 % of the sperm cells must look normal
After sperm separation, the quality of the sperm will be categorised as follows:
- Normal semen quality: more than 20 million motile sperm cells
- Reduced semen quality: between 5 and 20 million motile sperm cells
- Very reduced semen quality: less than 5 million motile sperm cells
If the semen quality is reduced, a second sperm sample must be collected.
If several sperm samples show a semen quality of less than 2 million motile sperm, the following is required:
- An ultrasound scan of the testicles and epididymes #
- Blood samples
- An examination of the urine for clamydia bacteria #
If several sperm samples show a sperm quality of less than 1 million, the following is also required:
- Blood samples for
- Chromosome analysis #

Where there are no sperm cells in the sperm sample, the following is required:
