Insemination using the partner's semen
Insemination using the partner's semen increases the likelihood of a sperm cell encountering and fertilising an egg. We stimulate the woman's egg maturation by means of a mild hormone treatment so that two or three mature eggs are formed instead of the one egg that is normally shed during a natural cycle.

Insemination can be performed without hormone treatment. However, experience shows that the chance of pregnancy is doubled if the formation of two mature eggs is stimulated, as there will then be more eggs that can be fertilised. In that case, there is a little risk of a twin-pregnancy. The hormone treatment is in the form of injections into the skin of the abdomen for a few days. We will teach you to make these injections yourself. You will find more information on administration of medication by using our links.

The maturation of follicles wherein the eggs are growing, is examined by means of ultrasound scanning. When the eggs are mature you must yourself administer an injection of ovulation hormone so that ovulation can be timed. When sperm cells are inseminated, they are led through the cervix into the uterine cavity and the fallopian tubes just around the time of ovulation when the chance of fertilisation is greatest. In that way up to 100 times more sperm cells are led to the fallopian tubes than is the case during normal sexual intercourse. The possibility of becoming pregnant is approximately 20% per insemination. For further information, have a look at our guide on Insemination Treatment.

Since the chance of obtaining af pregnancy by insemination is very low for women over 43 years, we do not offer insemination treatment in this age group but recommend IVF.

For patients covered by the Danish health insurance, treatment is free of charge apart from the cost of medicine, if you bring a reference from your general practitioner for both partners.
