Our results for 2010 once more surpass the Danish National IVF results, where 30.7 % of women < 40 years had a living foetus/embryo transfer and 13,5 % of women over 40 years (www.fertilitetsselskab.dk, årsrapporter).
Our success in the younger aged women is especially due to the fact, that we have performed more blastocyst transfers in women with several good quality embryos on day 2 instead of transferring 4-cell embryos. With the introduction of vitrification this spring, over 90 % of vitrified blastocysts survive the thawing process. Our results include all women that had an embryo transfer, also those with day-2 transfer. If we only look at women with blastocyst transfer, 65% became pregnant.
There are many reasons why in vitro fertilisation does not result in pregnancy – and new reasons are discovered all the time.
The following factors may play a part:
-
The woman’s age determines the pregnancy rate
-
Even embryos that look normal may stop developing
-
The uterine mucosa is unable to receive the embryos at the time of transfer
-
Uterine fibromas reduce the pregnancy potential
-
Hydrosalpinges (fallopian tubes filled with fluid) reduce the pregnancy potential
-
Endometriosis interferes with oocyte and endometrial quality
-
Very reduced sperm quality decreases the chance of correct fertilization

For comparison, the Danish National data report 14,7% living foetus per insemination for all women less than 40 years and 5,6% for women 40 years and older. The pregnancy rates for women over 43 years are extremely low. Therefore, we do not perform inseminations in this group but recommend IVF.
