Alcohol consumption during pregnancy affects sons sperm concentration

C. Ramlau-Hansen from Aarhus University has just published a new study in the European journal Human Reproduction which gives reason to believe that ingestion of even small amounts of alcohol during pregnancy can damage testicles development of boy foetuses.
The study compares sperm concentration among 347 young Danish men born in 1984-87. The mothers filled out a questionnaire during pregnancy where among other things was asked about alcohol intake during pregnancy.
The sperm concentration of the sons in 2006 showed that boys born of mothers who drank more than 4.5 drinks a week have 32% lower sperm concentration than sons of mothers who drank less than 1 drink per week.
There was no statistical difference in sperm motility, or the number of abnormal sperm. Sons own alcohol consumption had no influence on the outcome, and it was also adjusted for maternal smoking during pregnancy.
Alcohol is a cell poison which passes through the placenta into the fetal bloodstream. Animal studies have shown that alcohol has a toxic effect on sertoli cells in the testicles. These are the cells responsible for sperm production.
It is not unexpected from the literature, that exposures during the time period of testes development may impair spermatozoa production 20 years later in life.

We have been working hard to reduce the number of twin pregnancies in the age group 35-39 years by only transferring a single embryo. This has resulted in a slight decrease in pregnancies in this age group whereas the other groups are very stable over the years.
For 2009, 15,4% of women under 35 years had a twin pregnancy, 12,1% of women 35-39 years, and 17,9% of women 40-43 years.

New method for embryo cryopreservation

Vitrification is a new freezing method where the embryo is frozen extremely quickly. The method is better to prevent crystal formation inside the cells and increases survival after thawing.

Many embryos have too much fragments on the day of embryo transfer to be frozen. We now culture all normal embryos to the sixth day to see whether they develop into good quality blastocysts. You can then freeze them at the blastocyst stage instead (have a look into the lab and see what a blastocyst looks like).

This new procedure means, that we cannot tell you on the day of embryo transfer if there are any embryos for freezing. You have to sign the permission paper at the day of embryo transfer. If there are good quality blastocysts, we will freeze them at day 5 or 6 and send one copy of the permission paper to you. The lab will keep the other copy.

If you do not receive a letter with the permission paper, there were no embryos for freezing.

Opening Hours during Christmas

Since we know that many patients like to take a holiday during Christmas and New Year, we close at 3 p.m. from December 21^st until December 30^th.

Questions and answers about Influenza A

Read the official recommendations of the Danish National Board of Health regarding Influenza A (H1N1).

The vast majority of women, who get flu during pregnancy, implement it without problems. Pregnant women have no greater risk than others of becoming infected by the new Influenza A (H1N1). Should a pregnant woman, however, be infected, she will be at a slightly higher risk of complications such as pneumonia and breathing difficulties. The increased risk of complications is especially in the 2nd and 3rd trimester and can in severe cases lead to miscarriage and premature birth.

In general, pregnant women should avoid viral infections throughout pregnancy. This applies to all types of viruses, not just influenza.

Pregnant women must maintain a good hygiene, which implies thorough hand washing and avoiding contact with ill people. If a pregnant woman gets flu symptoms, she should call the doctor.

The National Board of Health recommends pregnant women, who belong to a high-risk group, to be vaccinated. Pregnant women, in 1st trimester however should get an individual assessment by their general practitioner before vaccination.

All other pregnant women in 2nd and 3rd trimester can be offered vaccination should the pregnant woman wish to be vaccinated.

Extended opening hours

From January 5th we will also perform ultrasound scanning in the late afternoon and the clinic will be open from 7.30 am until 5 pm Monday to Thursday. Friday and weekends are unchanged.
